The word Entertaiment derives from the Latin for “to entertain.” It originally meant something to give pleasure or diversion. Today, we think of the clown at your child’s birthday party, a Broadway musical or a stadium rock concert as forms of entertainment. We also use the word for sedentary activities such as watching television or playing tablet games. One of the most powerful examples is the story of Scheherazade, which is famous in professional storytelling traditions and has inspired composers Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski, director Pasolini and a groundbreaking video game.
